Public Hearing - February 13, 2008
STATE BOARD OF EDUCATION PUBLIC HEARING
FEBRUARY 13, 2008, 1:00- 2:00 p.m.

There will be a State Board of Education Public Hearing on February 13, 2008, from 1:00 – 2:00 p.m. The hearing will be held in the State Board of Education Board Room, 2070 Twin Towers East, Atlanta.

The purpose of this hearing is to solicit comments from the public regarding the following rules that were initiated in accordance with the Georgia Administrative Procedures Act at the January 10, 2008 State Board Meeting.

160-4-2-.03 List of State-Funded K-8 Subjects and 9-12 Courses. (Initiation) This rule is being amended to reflect recommendations from school systems for new courses and because of curriculum revisions and the implementation of the Georgia Performance Standards, some courses need to be deleted from the list or course numbers and titles need to be changed. Other changes to the rule include requiring requests for the addition of new courses to be submitted to the Department by September 1 of each year.

160-4-2-.20 List of State-Funded K-8 Subjects and 9-12 Courses for Students Entering Ninth Grade in 2008. (Initiation) This proposed new rule is applicable to students entering high school in the fall of 2008 under the new graduation rule. The intent of the rule is to eliminate confusion between courses that may meet different graduation requirements. This rule reflects graduation requirements set by the graduation rule, Rule 160-4-2-.48 High School Graduation Requirements for Students Enrolling in the Ninth Grade for the First Time in the 2008-09 School Year and Subsequent years, in effect as of the fall of 2008.

160-5-2-.06 Residential Facility Grant. (Initiation) This rule is proposed to fulfill the requirement of O.C.G.A. § 20-2-133(b)(5) which states that annual grants in state funding shall be awarded to local units of administration serving eligible children under the law. The grants represent the difference between the actual state funds received pursuant to O.C.G.A. § 20-2-161 and the reasonable and necessary expenses incurred in educating that child, calculated pursuant to regulations adopted by the State Board of Education.

Written comments can be sent to the State Board of Education, 2053 Twin Towers East, Atlanta, Georgia 30334. Oral testimony at the Public Hearing will be limited to a maximum of 3 minutes. Sign-in sheets will be posted at the hearing and speakers will be called in order from the sign-in sheets. If, before 2:00 p.m. there are no more speakers, the Public Hearing will be adjourned.

If you have questions, please contact Ms. Lynn Roberts at the State Department of Education, at (404) 657-7410 or email at lroberts@doe.k12.ga.us
